In writing this book I had several objectives: (1) to present the important topics of algebra and trigonometry in such a solid, accurate way that no student using the book will have to unlearn anything; (2) to offer these topics in such a readable style as to disprove, if possible, the legend that mathematics books are not written in English but in jargon; (3) to provide an abundant number and variety of problems that will arm the instructor with a complete battery of daily assignments and test questions; (4) to supply numerous and worthwhile appli- cations, sufficiently comprehensible to students to avoid any alienation of their affection for useful mathematics.
