Prin televiziune se înţelege ramura tehnicii care oforă posibilitatea transmiterii instantanee la distanţă a imaginilor fixe sau mobile, prin analiza şi refacerea imaginilor pe cale electronică. Înrudită cu televiziunea este fototelegrafia, dar aici atît analiza cît şi înregistrarea imaginii se efectuează pe cale mecanică, ceea ce exclude posibilitatea transmiterii imaginilor în mişcare.
